HNNK Dalmacija advance in Alf Beese Cup
In a showdown between Provinical Elite's HNNK Dalmacija and Provincial East side Toronto Golden Eagles, a shootout was needed to decide who would advance in the 2018 Alf Beese Cup.
The first 30 minutes of play saw the Golden Eagles hold the majority of possession, looking to play wide and cut in when the opportunity came.
That opportunity came in the 35th minute, when Adekunle Oyedele sprung into the 18 yard box and finished off the first goal of the game, rewarding the high pressed Golden Eagles side.
Toronto would take the 1-0 lead into the half, but that was soon disrupted by HNNK's Josip Bijelic (55'), whose shot from the edge of the box was tipped in by a Golden Eagles defender and found the back of the net.
Dalmacija would find another goal by Claudio Sereno after he chipped the rushing Golden Eagles keeper to put them up 2-1.
Needing a goal to push this game into a shootout, the Golden Eagles were given a free kick in the 75th minute from just under 25 yards out. Up stepped centre back Anderson Romero to take the set piece, which would curl top right and give Toronto that tying goal.
90 minutes couldn't decide a winner, so penalty kicks would have to decide who would move onto the next round of the Alf Beese Cup.
After goal scorer Oyedele's shot was denied by Craig Boytchuk, HNNK would finish off the Golden Eagles in a 4-2 pk win and advance to second round of play.
